Need research help

I'm looking for an approximate number of referees in the U.S., or even that of a subset that I could extrapolate into a good guess.

Can't find a number at NASO.
Can't find one at NFHS.
Not at IAABO.

Can't find a number at the Washington Officials Association.

Can't find a number of teams that play HS basketball anywhere (from which I could extrapolate to a good number).

Can't find a thing!

Anybody out there care to help?

All referees at all levels? Or in a specific range? And how would you factor in duplicates--people who ref multiple sports?

Ideally, it would be all refs at all levels. I'll take any number I can get, because right now I have none.

It's to try to convince publishers that refs are a market that would buy a book.

I'll see what I can scrounge.

There are also sports or history or biography fans who aren't refs who would be interested in a book that had appeal to non-refs.

Found here:

"Coaches and scouts held 217,000 jobs; athletes, 18,000; and umpires, referees, and other sports officials, 19,000."

The estimates come from here.

Those are obviously the people who list "sports official" as their primary job. It says there are 240 in Seattle. There are about that many who do high school boys' basketball alone.

I need not just vocations, but avocations.

On a Friday night, how many high schools are playing hoops? That number would be a good start.

Out of all the basketball teams in Washington back in 07-08, Oakville ranked 354th, according to MaxPreps. Which means there are at least 354 boys basketball teams. There are probably at least 500 boys + girls teams. Which means at least 500 active refs during any given week, right? And that's just for basketball.

Since we have about 2% of the nation's population, multiply that number by 50 to get 25,000 basketball refs nationwide.

That's my back-of-the-envelope calculation.

25,000 high school basketball refs, that is. And that's probably a low-ball estimate.

Ouch. And I even missed Republic, which, at 0-20, came in ranked 379th in the state.
