I'll take yucky parenting for $800, Alex

Overheard from a parent at one of my games today (5th grade girls):

"Katie, I took today off of work for this, so you'd better play well!"

Proper Response:

"It's OK, Dad. Remember the Rolex you "lost" last week? I pawned it because you didn't get a raise last year."

I can't even imagine what you get to hear nowadays. In my umping career 20 (cough) some years ago, I never heard anything like that. Although when I was playing HS softball I once had an ump tell me to blow him. My dad had to be restrained in the stands, but for just cause.....

Seriously, it seems like the intensity of the incidents/comments has risen to such levels that I'm not sure if we can ever go back. I did hear of a league where parents weren't even allowed at the game. I loved having my parents come and watch me (usually my mom was the coach) and they always gave me proper encouragement.

I would have a hard time holding myself back from responding to these parents.

An ump told you to BLOW him???? When you were in high school??? Holy shit. I hope your family pursued it and that guy never did another game. Unbelievable.

It was '85 or '86 and he was actually a fellow student, who I had actually dated a few years before. Guess he just couldn't get over the heartbreak, huh? The head of the umpires was in the stands and saw it, and I don't think he did ump again, at least not that year. Of course what really pissed me off was that I was safe at second base and he called me out....
